Creaking Noise

Hello all! It has been a while since I last posted anything here. Glad to say that since I made my adjustments to my IKEA Bed and Lillaker Bed Slats just over a year ago that my Bed Slats have not fallen to the floor once! HOORAY! If you are new to this blog and are looking for a solution to your falling IKEA bed slats then check out my first post in the Blog Archive under April 2010. On a sad note my joy from solving the falling slat issue did not last long. Over time my bed has started making noises. The wood frame creaks or cracks every time someone gets on or off of the bed. Upon first examination I noticed that the side beam of the Bed Frame was composed of two parts, the Beam and a smaller finishing piece that was laminated to the top. What I had noticed right away was that these two pieces were starting to separate from each other on both sides of the bed. This was Suspect #1. The only other suspect in my opinion could be the Beam itself and where it attaches to the Head and Foot Boards (Suspect #2). My plan to solve this new IKEA Platform Bed problem was to simply cut some 2x4's and attempt to provide some extra support to the Beam taking pressure off of the simple one bolt attachment at each end. If this didn't work then I was going to quite possibly get "screw happy" with the Beam Finishing Piece or pull my hair out.

Opting to start my troubleshooting with Suspect #2 I quickly cut some non-chemically treated 2x4 lumber to size. Make sure you get the lumber that is not treated with chemicals as they will leach into the air in your bedroom. Probably wont kill ya but probably not good for ya either. Then again, thousands of people suck putrid toxins into their lungs all day long via legalized cancer sticks. What is another small dose of toxins to them? Moving right along........ I wedged these 2x4's right under the Side Beams directly in the middle. I wasted no time climbing into the bed and wouldnt ya know, NO NOISES!!!!! HOORAY! I am assuming that my wife did not cause this "creaking" to start and that it was my excessive weight problem that did. So my fellow disgruntled IKEA fans, either lose some weight or cut some wood. Peace!

p.s. You may want to paint the wood to match the decor and maybe secure the 2x4's with some hardware. I'm gonna be a rebel and go the No Hardware route. Wish me luck.

  1. Hi, I was wondering how your new method (with the 2x4 "feet") has worked so far. Just bought a queen Malm two days ago, but haven't assembled it yet. I got the simplest slats (the "Lade" model) which have no bow to them, so perhaps I wouldn't even run into the problem in the first place?

    Thanks!

  2. Hey Mark,
The 2x4 feet where used to get rid of a "creaking" noise and have worked perfectly! The problem that I wrote about a year ago was about the slats falling. Just want to clarify that the 2x4's will not help with falling slats. Good luck with the bed! Hang on to that receipt! ;-)

  4. Awesome, thanks so much for posting this. I tried several other "fixes" like tightening the nuts and adding in extras screws to the supports, none of it worked. It took me 5 minutes to cut two 8" lengths of 2x4 from scrap and it fixed the problem immediately!
